Home Remedies To Clean Drain Pipes

Most people automatically reach for the drain cleaner products sold in the stores to clean out clogged pipes. Although this can be quite effective, it may not necessarily be the safest solution.

This is one of the main reason why household cleaning remedies are often used. When you mix the solutions right it can really help you remove all the dirt, hair, and other substances without emitting harmful chemicals into the air.

Using more naturally-based drain cleaning can be especially important when you are cleaning a smaller, more confined area. The bathroom of course is one case in point. Either way, if you have a vent turn it on while cleaning.

To safely clean out your drains, follow these steps:

  1. Gather your materials together. For most jobs you can use household table salt and vinegar. You can also use baking soda. You are probably going to need a bucket, scrubbing device or cleaning cloth, and a bucket. You also need the appropriate-sized measuring cup (for most jobs 1 cup measuring device).
  2. Mix your solution. First, pour 1 cup of baking soda with 1 cup of vinegar. It should be a liquid solution as you stir it and get it ready for the very next step.
  3. Pour the solution down the drain. You can let it sit for 30 minutes, especially if your drain is clogged. You should see or hear the bubbles caused by the reaction of the baking soda with the vinegar.
  4. Pour boiling water down the pipes. This along with the vinegar/baking soda solution will help do away with all the debris that are stuck in the drain pipes.

Additional Advice

For less serious problems you can mix ½ cup of salt with a gallon of boiling water. You can then pour this salt water solution down the drain. The following sections will alert you to any precautions you should take.

Warning

Remember that the advice in this article is more appropriate for metal piping systems. Never under any circumstances should you use boiling water in plastic pipes. You are also strongly advised to never use a vinegar solution as above after immediately using a store-bought chemical drain cleaner.

Otherwise, the results could be potentially disastrous. Certain cleaning products should never be mixed with vinegar as it could cause the emission of deadly fumes and/or a dangerous explosive reaction.

Someone could become injured, or they could even get killed in the process. Be very, very, careful and follow the cleaning instructions above vary carefully.
