Home Remedies for Cleaning Gold

Gold coins and other gold jewelry often is very precious to a user. These are items that are often kept as a piece of memorabilia from the giver.

If anyone is looking for a way to avoid using harsh chemicals to clean their jewelry introduction to these home remedies may be considered heaven sent. The same is true for the individuals who do not want to spend money on what it would cost to have them cleaned by a professional.

Simple Tips

The tips you see below are divided by type of cleaning method or solution used. You can choose either one of these ways if you’d like to make your pieces shine.

The reason you are being given more than one option is so that you have a choice. You have more than one method from which to choose.

If using dish detergent…

  • First, fill up a large bowl with some warm water. You should add to this 2 to 3 cups of mild dish detergent.
  • The gold pieces you own should then be placed into this mixture where they would sit for 10 to 20 minutes.
  • After you are done letting the above pieces soak you can then fill up another bowl with warm water. This clean water would then be used for the rinsing step.
  • To dry, use a soft cloth that will not scratch your gold pieces. This will help buff all your newly-cleaned jewelry and it will help you get rid of any tarnishing.

If using the boiling method…

  • A pot or pan should be filled with enough water and/or a few drops of dish soap so that you can easily soak the gold pieces you want to clean.
  • After you place your jewelry into the pot you should then place it on the stove and allow the water to come to a boil.
  • You can let this water with your gold sitting in it for several minutes. Then, you should turn off the stove and drain the water from the pot or pan.
  • Rinse the gold in warm water if necessary. Then, dry each piece of carefully with a soft, non-abrasive cloth and be careful not to handle it while it is hot.

If using a soft toothbrush…

A soft-bristled toothbrush can really help wipe away dirt and grime. This very simple cleaning instrument can really do wonders for removing dirt and grime from places it is hard to remove.

Just scrub gently with the toothbrush. If you want, you might want to use a mild soapy mixture created using some of the tips you see above.

In any case, just be careful because gold can be soft. You should use as little pressure as possible as far as what is necessary if you want to avoid scratching the gold’s surface.

What not to Do

If you want to clean your gold pieces right there are a variety of things you should not do. One of these is that you should not avoid abrasive cleaners like a metal polish or toothpaste when cleaning the gold.

Otherwise, you could very easily scratch or wear away at the gold’s delicate surface. If you dry the gold you should remember to handle it carefully and dab it or blot it dry versus wiping it. This will help remove all moisture that is stuck in your gold pieces.
