Home Remedies For Cleaning Solutions

It is possible to clean your home without using cleaning products that have toxic chemicals in them. In fact, you can even make your own household cleaners using ingredients and substances commonly found right at home.

Why Home Remedies?

Home remedies are recommended because they are safer to use around pet and children. Furthermore, often the cost of creating various mixtures to use for home cleaning solutions are oftentimes far less expensive. Oftentimes the same results can be achieved using home cleaning remedies as would be achieved using toxic chemicals.

Some Helpful Tips

Non-toxic cleaning is achieved in several ways, using a variety of common household substances including baking soda and vinegar. These are often mixed together in certain proportions as described in the next paragraph.

Window Cleaning

To create an easy cleaning solution, you can create a non-toxic window cleaner using ¼ cup liquid dish soap mixed in 2 cups of water. You can place this cleaning mixture in a spray bottle and squirt it on your windows. You can then wipe with a clean, soft cloth.

It also would help to rinse off the window with plain water when you are done. Then, wipe dry with a lint and/or fiber-free cloth or fiber-free paper towel. This will help you present a shiny, streak-free glass surface.

All-Purpose Cleaning Solution

You can also make your own personal all-purpose cleaner. Just a teaspoon of Borax, a few drops of lemon juice, and a teaspoon of castile soap along with a quart of warm water can do wonders for you. This natural home solution can clean most surfaces.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner

You can also make your own toilet cleaner using ¼ cup baking soda poured into the toilet. You then would pour in a cup of vinegar on top of it, and let this bubbling mixture stand for a few minutes. Then, use a toilet brush to scrub it clean.

Drain Cleaning Mixture

You can even make your own drain cleaner using simple household ingredients. If you want to unclog a bathroom or kitchen drain you should first empty as much water out of the drain as possible.

Then, put ½ cup baking soda and then immediately after pour ½ cup white vinegar down the drain. Let it bubble up and then rinse this mixture with hot water. This works for most drain clogging.

Carpet and Upholstery Maintenance

You can find recipes that require ammonia or vinegar and water along with baking soda to use for steam cleaning and deodorizing. These are substances often used to clean carpet or upholstery.

For the cleaning step you might use approximately 1 part vinegar or 1 part ammonia to about 10 cups of water. Then, for the deodorizing step you would sprinkle the baking soda on the fabric or upholstery and let it sit.

Once the carpet or piece of furniture is dry then you can use a vacuum cleaner to suck up the baking soda as well as odor stuck in the surface. These methods of cleaning and deodorizing are safe to use on most carpets and furniture fabrics, with the exception of certain types of leather.
