Home Steam Cleaning Solution

Steam cleaning is one way to help pull up dirt that is deeply embedded in the carpets in the rooms of your house. Any homeowner who wants to save money can avoid using harsh chemicals while still removing the dirt, grime, and debris from deep within every inch of your floor.

Possible Solutions

Steam cleaning is quite popular right now. One of the home solutions you can use for this process is vinegar and water. This is a basic solution that is in fact widely accepted around the world.

You can also complete steam cleaning jobs with ammonia. You can even use a solution That is created using a mix of vinegar and ammonia.

Mixing Recommendations

Usually 1 part vinegar or 1 part ammonia with 10 parts water is recommended. Another measure you could use is 1 cup of vinegar or ammonia per gallon of water. Remember that hot water instead of cool or cold water is recommend for this purpose.

Venting Recommendations

If you need to vent the room out you can open the windows to encourage proper ventilation. This will help relieve the odor that occurs when pulling up dirt from deep within your carpets when steam cleaning. The smell is likely to disappear when the carpet is dry.

Deodorizing Recommendations

Once you are done with the steam cleaning using vinegar and water or ammonia and water you can then sprinkle baking soda over the moist, clean carpet. Let this sit and soak into the carpet for as little time as 30 minutes on up to 24 hours, and then vacuum it up.

If you want, you could also add a few drops of essential oil to your vinegar and water solution. The trick in this case though would be to find scents that would work well with the vinegar. Otherwise, you can just use essential oil and water and then later sprinkle the baking soda over the spot.

Additional Tips

If you want to create scrubbing suds, you might be able to use vinegar and baking soda together in certain types of machines. You can also try using a small amount of dish detergent.

Remember that usually if you use dish detergent you only need a small amount-probably only about a teaspoon or tablespoon per quart of water. Dish soap is recommended because it usually is biodegradable, but you can also invest in biodegradable carpet shampoo.

You should also note that steam cleaning has not only been used on carpets. Certain kinds of solutions (generally without the dish soap but with just the vinegar, water, or ammonia) work very well on non-wood and non-porous kitchen, hall, or bathroom floor surfaces.

Warnings

Always make sure you check the manufacturer's instructions of any steam cleaning machine you own or rent. Otherwise, you could damage the machine if you use the above solutions in a steam cleaning session that should not be used in a certain type of steam cleaner.

The best way to avoid machine damage is to find a steam cleaner that is designed for use with common household ingredients as mentioned in this article. Otherwise, you could be paying a huge fine especially if you are renting a unit.

Furthermore, you should note that the best advice in the case of using a steam cleaner on a floor that is not carpeted is to test the solution. Find an inconspicuous spot on which to try out your home steam cleaning remedy. More than likely one of the remedies in this article would work just fine.
