How To Clean Painted Door Hinges

Cleaning painted door hinges the wrong way could cause the paint to wear or chip off. Therefore, you should follow this very short guide to preserve your painted door hinges for as long as possible.

One way you can accomplish this task is by making your own low-cost homemade mild cleaning solution. This is the easiest way to make sure you do not damage that precious paint job.

The following section gives you easy steps for making the spray solution and using it to gently clean your painted door hinges. These steps are not hard to follow but still make sure you read them carefully.

Simple Steps

  1. You should gather all your supplies. You need the following items: An old toothbrush, 2 cleaning rag (1 for washing and 1 for drying), spray bottle, 1 cup measuring cup, and 1 tsp measuring spoon.
  2. Fill up a spray bottle with a mixture of 2 cups of water and 1 tsp dish soap. It is important to make sure that you only use this small amount of dish soap otherwise it will suds up too much.
  3. The mixture you create should then be applied to a cleaning rag. Then you would rub it over your door hinges.
  4. Get an old toothbrush wet with water and then scrub it gently over the pained hinges. You should get into the creases as thoroughly as possible, cleaning out all the dirt and grime. This will ensure that your painted door hinges will open and close properly.
  5. Wipe the painted door hinges completely dry with a dry rag. This will help remove any excess moisture and residue from the door hinges.

Additional Advice

From time to time your door hinges may need to be lubricated. It would be helpful if you clear away any dust that may have accumulated before you apply the lubricant solution or lubricant oil.

The easiest way to apply the lubrication solution would be to either put a small amount of oil into a spray bottle or use a spray-on solution. In between sprays you are advised to move the door back and forth. This process should be repeated until the door stops squeaking.

By the way, if you want to lubricate your door hinges the best time to do it would be right after you have already cleaned it. The lubricating process also works best when the hinges are completely dried, so if you want to ensure they are dry you may want to wait maybe 15 to 20 minutes, or even an hour just to make sure.
