Multiple Health Benefits of Orange Juice

Orange juice has many health benefits, according to a study published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Services. However, very few people are fully aware of this, although it is the most commonly consumed fruit juice in the USA. Let's take a brief look at some its useful properties.

It is a source of Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that our body needs for growth and to repair damaged tissues. It contains antioxidants that protect our body from free floating radicals that can damage cells and tissues. However, our body cannot synthesize this very important vitamin and has to depend upon external sources for it. Orange juice is one of the best sources of Vitamin C. According to The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, drinking at least two glasses of orange juice every day can increase the concentration of Vitamin C in the body by up to 64 percent.

It protects from inflammation

Intake of glucose and high-fat foods can cause inflammatory reactions in the body. These reactions are our body's natural response to foreign particles. However, if continued unchecked for prolonged periods of time, they can lead to many diseases including a condition called insulin resistance, which is the main reason for Type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis. The latter is described as the hardening of blood vessels due to high fat deposits. If taken with a high-carbohydrate, high-fat meal, orange juice can prevent the inflammations in the body, according to The American Journal of Clinical Medicine.

It helps lower high diastolic blood pressure

Diastolic blood pressure is the pressure in our blood vessels between successive heartbeats. It is considered low when the reading is below 60; and high when the reading is above 90. A high diastolic blood pressure means that your blood vessels do not get enough time to relax between heartbeats. This can be vey dangerous for you. The best remedy for this is to change lifestyle, such as losing weight and eating healthy food. A study published in 'The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition' in January 2011 suggests orange juice as one of the best natural remedies. Orange juice contains a water-soluble pigment called hesperidin, which improves the activities of blood vessels and thus helps reduce diastolic blood pressure.

It helps decrease cholesterol levels

Cholesterol is a useful substance produced by the liver and is found in food from animal sources. It is required to make Vitamin D that helps build cells walls, and bile salts that help digest fat. Our liver produces enough cholesterol for its daily needs, which means we do not need to take is from external sources. However, it is hard to avoid eating food with cholesterol because it is found in almost every food we like to eat. Excess cholesterol in the body can lead to heart disease and other serious problems. A study published in 'The American Journal of Clinical Medical' suggest that drinking orange juice regularly may help decrease the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in patients with high cholesterol level.
