How to Freeze Chapati Roti?

Chapati or roti is traditional flat bread made up of whole wheat found in Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Kenya and Bangladesh etc. Chapati is quite easy to cook but some people find the preparation to be quite time consuming. So a lot of people who have a busy schedule choose to make lots of chapatis’ together and freeze them for future purpose.

Begin with the Freezer-Friendly Roti Dough

Though the dough of chapati roti is not very difficult to prepare but in order to freeze it, you will need a slight moderation in the ingredients. For the normal everyday chapati, you require whole-wheat flour, water, pinch of salt and ghee (type of clarified butter). However for freezing the chapati roti, just substitute the water with yogurt. The advantage of using yogurt is that your roti will remain soft and supple even you will have it out from the freezer.

Freezing the Cooked Chapati Roti

If you want your chapati to be absolutely ready when taken out from the freezer then all you need to do is to follow these steps:

  • Cook the chapati roti as it is cooked on the stove.
  • Once all the roti are cooked and are cool stack them together in a group of 4, 6 or 8 as many as you would need at a time.
  • Separate each roti with a wax paper so that they do not freeze together.
  • Now place them in an aluminum foil and place them in the freezer bag, make sure you squeeze out the air.
  • This would allow the chapatis to stay fresh for about three months.

Freezing the Uncooked Chapati Roti

You can freeze the uncooked chapati roti in the same way. All you need to do would be to make the roti and before cooking it, place them on the wax paper and follow all the above steps as it is.

Thawing Chapatis

  • When you plan to use the chapati, the best way is to put the packet from the freezer to fridge at least about three hours before consumption.
  • If you require roti suddenly, you can thaw it quickly in the microwave. Make sure you choose the defrosting option and cover it well.
  • Thawing the chapatis on the room temperature would allow the bacteria to grow so avoid that method.
So with this method, you can preserve the chapati roti for about three months without any issue.
