Acebutolol (Sectral) belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers reduce the workload on the heart and help it to beat more regularly. Acebutolol is used to control high blood pressure (hypertension), and to treat or prevent certain heart rhythm problems (ventricular arrhythmias). Acebutolol does not cure high blood pressure. Generic acebutolol capsules are available.

Acebutolol is used to treat high blood pressure. It relaxes your blood vessels so your heart doesn't have to pump as hard. Acebutolol also is used to treat an irregular heartbeat.

How to Take Acebutolol

Take acebutolol capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the capsules whole with a drink of water. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking Acebutolol except on your prescriber's advice. Should be taken before meals or at bedtime. The dosage of acebutolol should be reduced in patients with kidney and liver dysfunction.

• A heart medication such as nifedipine (Procardia, Adalat),
• Cimetidine
• Hawthorn
• Medicines for colds and breathing difficulties
• Medicines for diabetes such as glyburide
• Medicines for high blood pressure
• Medicines to control heart rhythm
• Water pills.
• The stomach medication cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB)

You may not be able to take acebutolol, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring if you are taking any of the medicines listed above. Talk to your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking.
