What is Atretol and for what Atretol is used ?

Atretol is used to aid in the treatment of epilepsy. Atretol is an "extended-release" form of carbamazepine, which means that the medicine is released into the body slowly instead of all at once.

Atretol (kar-ba-MAZ-e-peen) is used to control some types of seizures in the treatment of epilepsy. It is also used to relieve pain due to trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureux). It should not be used for other more common aches or pains.

How to Take Atretol

Atretol medicine comes in several forms, such as regular tablets, extended release tablets, chewable tablets, and liquid. Do not break, crush, or chew the extended-release tablets. Swallow them whole. Your pharmacist can tell you if you are taking extended- release tablets.

If you are taking the liquid form of Atretol medicine, shake the bottle well before taking the medicine. Taking Atretol with meals may lessen the chance the drug will upset your stomach.

Take this medicine regularly to control seizures. Do not stop taking it without your health care provider's approval. You may have to gradually reduce your dosage. Seizures may get worse if you suddenly stop taking this medicine.

• Do not take Atretol medicine if you are taking an MAO inhibitor antidepressant

• Acetaminophen (Tylenol).
• Antibiotics such as clarithromycin (Biaxin), erythromycin.
• Birth control pills.
• Bupropion (Wellbutrin).
• Cimetidine (Tagamet).
• Danazol (Danocrine)
• Phenobarbital
• Theophylline

You may not be able to take Atretol, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring if you are taking any of the medicines listed above. Talk to your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking.

If you take overdose of Atretol medication the seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center.

What to do if you take Missed Dose of Atretol ?

If you miss a dose of Atretol, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How to Store Atretol Tablet:

• Keep Atretol medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children.
• Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F).
• Do not store the tablet forms of Atretol in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places. Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down and become less effective .
• Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
