What is Nebivolol and for what Nebivolol is used ?

Nebivolol belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers, which block beta receptors in the heart, lungs and other organs of the body. Blocking these receptors prevents the action of two chemicals called noradrenaline and adrenaline that occur naturally in the body. These are often referred to as the 'fight or flight' chemicals as they are responsible for the body's reaction to stressful situations.

Blocking the beta receptors in the heart causes the heart to beat more slowly and with less force. This means that the pressure at which blood is pumped out of the heart to the rest of the body is reduced. This medicine also widens the blood vessels. These are two of the ways in which nebivolol helps to reduce blood pressure, however the whole mechanism is not fully understood.

How to Take Nebivolol

Take Nebivolol medication exactly as prescribed. Do not stop taking Nebivolol medication suddenly without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when the medication is stopped abruptly

What are the Side Effects of Nebivolol

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with Nebivolol medicine. • Do not suddenly stop taking Nebivolol. You must gradually reduce the dose or you may get a dangerous increase in blood pressure. Ask your prescriber or health care professional for advice.
• Nebivolol medicine may mask the symptoms of low blood sugar such as increased heart rate, tremor and nausea. People with diabetes should carefully monitor their blood sugar.
• Nebivolol medicine may reduce your ability to drive or operate machinery safely. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you and you are sure it won't affect your performance.
• If you should require local or general anaesthesia, it is important that you inform your anaesthetist you are taking this medicine.

What drugs may interact with Nebivolol

When nebivolol is taken together with calcium channel blockers such as verapamil or diltiazem, the risk of slow heart rate, hypotension and heart failure may be increased. Verapamil should not be given intravenously with this medicine.

If nebivolol is taken together with clonidine, there is a risk of a rebound increase in blood pressure if clonidine is stopped. The nebivolol should be stopped several days before slowly stopping the clonidine.

When taken with other medicines that lower blood pressure, including tricyclic antidepressants and antipsychotics, the blood pressure lowering effects of nebivolol may be increased.

What to do if you take Overdose of Nebivolol ?

If you take overdose of Nebivolol the seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center.

What to do if you take Missed Dose of Nebivolol ?

If you miss a dose of Nebivolol , take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
