Uses of Trileptal

Trileptal is a medicine to treat partial seizures in adults. It is taken alone or with other seizure medicines. Taken with other seizure medicines, Trileptal is also used to help treat partial seizures in children 4-16 years old. Trileptal is widely used by psychiatrists as a mood stabilizing medication. In epilepsy, Trileptal is most commonly used for partial onset seizures .

TRILEPTAL is indicated for use as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in adults and children ages 6-16 with epilepsy. A few of my patients so far have had to stop Trileptal for ankle swelling. 

Trileptal Bipolar

Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) is a second generation anticonvulsant medications, approved for the treatment of epileptic seizures. Anticonvulsants like Oxcarbazepine are believed to work in part by by enhancing the actions of a natural brain chemical, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid).

How to Take Trileptal:

You can use nicotine patches along with Trileptal. However, combining the two treatments can raise your blood pressure, so it's important to tell your doctor if you plan to use both. Do not smoke while using a patch, because too much nicotine can cause serious side effects. Always take it exactly as prescribed.

Side Effects of Trileptal:

The most commonly observed adverse events associated with the use of Trileptal and not seen at an equivalent incidence among placebo-treated patients were gastrointestinal complaints, including

• Dizziness
• Drowsiness
• Depression or abnormal thinking
• Difficulty concentrating
• Speech or language problems
• Difficulty with coordination and walking

Other rare side effects of Trileptal:

• Headaches
• Double vision or blurred vision
• Anxiety
• Slurred speech
• Irregular heart beat

Warnings and precautions for Trileptal:

• Talk to your health care provider before stopping Trileptal or any other seizure medicine. Stopping a seizure medicine all at once can cause status epilepticus, a serious problem.
• Do not take Trileptal drug if you have any type of seizure disorder.
• Do not take Trileptal drug if you have a history of anorexia or bulimia.
• Do not drink alcohol while taking Trileptal drug.
• If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, do your best to quit smoking with the aid of counseling and support before turning to drug therapy.
• When it is time to stop taking Trileptal, do not stop abruptly. Your doctor will have you taper off gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, fever, general feeling of illness, headache, high fever, irritability or worsening emotional or mental problems, nausea, sleep problems, vomiting.

How to Store Trileptal:

Keep Trileptal medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture.
